Change is bound to come with any diagnosis of cancer. And change can be difficult to accept. Some changes we welcome and prepare for with anticipation, such as changing jobs or getting married. Those changes are easier to accept because we have chosen them. We can plan for them and even enjoy them. But the stress caused by an unplanned change like cancer is difficult. It is a journey we have to, but don’t want to take. And it brings a series of difficult choices with it.
As schedules change to accommodate treatment, family activities will change, goals will change, and roles may change as well. Changing schedules might mean your spouse/partner must stop working or has to travel to another city for treatment. Changing goals might mean postponing a big purchase, like a home, or considering adoption instead of planning a pregnancy. Changing roles might mean you must shoulder more responsibilities, while still working to maintain a household.
